Privacy Policy
The NZTopo50 apps, by design, don’t communicate any data to the app developers (Right Place Resources) or to anyone else, including any data about yourself, or your location. Neither do we collect or require you to supply any personal data about yourself.
The slightly longer story…
The NZTopo50 apps are largely self contained with all of the map images and other data installed along with the app. Some additional satellite imagery can (optionally) be downloaded from our webserver. We do not collect any personalised data associated with which images you are downloading.
The NZTopo50 app will ask for access to your location, and for access to photo libraries and the camera if you use these feature. This is a standard request that is required by the operating system (Android or iOS) of all apps that use your location, and is a way of highlighting to you that the NZTopo50 app has access to the location information supplied by your phone. The NZTopo50 app needs this access (obviously) if you want to display your location on the map and to let you record your tracks etc. This information is only used within the app and is not made available to anyone else, including us, through the app.
What if I want to share my trips
If you choose to share your waypoints, routes, or trips with other people, then this is fully supported. You are free to share these by any means you choose, including confidentially to yourself or to selected people, or using your choice of available third party sharing tools (e.g. google drive etc. in which case the privacy of your data is subject to their terms). Information that you share does not pass through any servers owned or controlled by us. For example you can create a file directly from the app which you can store and/or distribute confidentially within your full control.
What about promotional stuff from us
As a matter of policy we won’t send any unsolicited communication – and indeed we can’t as we have no contact details for you. That doesn’t mean that we aren’t interested in hearing from you, and that we don’t provide information and updates that might be of interest to you. Check out the information on our website, and our Facebook channel for news and info. This is up to you to sign up to. We also love to hear from you with any questions, comments, or stories. If you send us information then we will hold that information in confidence unless there is mutual agreement to share it. Depending on how you communicate with us, your correspondence may sit in our files somewhere (e.g. our email inbox). We’ll make reasonable endeavours to keep this secure.
Something we won’t do is add things like a prompt within the app to ‘rate this app’ or any other time wasting promotional distractions. The app is designed for your use, not for its own self promotion. There is however a link within the app for your convenience if you do wish to rate the app
What other privacy considerations are there
If you use a phone and/or connect to the internet then there is a range of data that invariably is made available to other parties. This includes things like information that Google or Apple hold about you, your cell phone service provider (e.g. Spark), and any wifi and internet providers that you use. How this information gets used is up to those parties and whatever agreements you have with them, and what policies they have in place. This has nothing to do with Right Place Resources or the NZTopo50 app itself. The only connection we have to this is, for example, that Apple and Google collect some app usage data, as well as all the account information needed to run the app stores, and some of this information in turn is made available to app developers – according to their respective terms and conditions.
What about this website
If you use this website then some information about your location, IP address, browser version, etc are potentially recorded by the company hosting the website and could be made available to us. We have no interest in using this information beyond checking that the website is working correctly. We don’t add anything extra to the web pages for the purposes of tracking anything.
